Paula’s focus lies in teaching saxophone privately to all ranges of experience and age. Her goal is to cultivate their musicianship and help them gain confidence in their performance abilities whether they are planning on pursuing a career in music or not. She believes that having a solid foundation in saxophone technique and a healthy embouchure are imperative in saxophone pedagogy and aims to implement this philosophy in her lessons. Paula also believes that education is just as necessary for teachers as students and strives to continue learning about the saxophone so that her students receive the highest quality of education.

Paula has been teaching saxophone privately since 2017 with students ranging from complete beginners to university students in both private and group sessions.  She has prepared students to compete in Kiwanis festivals, led saxophone sectionals for students in elementary, high school, and university level ensembles. Mainly based in Stratford, she is also taking on students in the London and Waterloo area.

Paula holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University where she studied with Dave Wiffen and has now completed her Master of Music in performance and literature with Dr. Bobbi Thompson at Western University. Throughout her education, Paula has been fortunate enough to participate in guest masterclasses led by artists such as the Quasar Quartet, Dr. Masahito Sugihara, Dr. Diane Hunger, Dr. Shawna Pennock, Chris Mitchell, and most recently Dr. Henning Schröder. During her own career has participated in the Kiwanis festival, performed with the Szivi Quartet in the Stratford Summer Music festival, and is an active member of the Stratford Concert Band.

Mia is a pianist and an educator native of Osaka, Japan, currently based in Stratford, ON.  She teaches at the School of Music Arts in London, ON, and is now accepting new students at Coda Piano Studio in Stratford.

Mia started taking music lessons at age 3 through the Yamaha education system and has been surrounded by music and piano ever since.  Mia holds a Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB, and a Master of Music from Western University.  She was fortunate to study with various teachers including Lynn Johnson, Stephen Runge, and Brett Kingsbury.

While she was a student, she participated in several summer music programs to develop her solo and chamber music repertoire such as Orford Music Academy (QC), Scotia Festival (NS) and Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival (NF).

Mia’s interest in piano is not only performing pieces by great composers but also
having a healthy approach to the instrument both physically and mentally.  She received a full scholarship to attend Dr. Lister-Sink Intensive Injury Prevention Program in the US to learn prevention of performance injuries from piano playing.

As a performer and educator, Mia is looking forward to sharing the joy of music with students for building a life-long skill for students.

Mr. Potvin’s teaches the centuries’ old method of voice training which is based on the natural development of the voice. Everything is done to help the student produce comfortable singing, with a rich and full tone without ever forcing or pushing.
Stéphane has earned a Bachelor of music in piano performance, a Bachelor of education, and a Masters’ in conducting. He received his vocal training from Louise Yard and Carol Bagott-Forte. He has been teaching voice, piano, and conducting for over thirty years. Under Mr Potvin’s tutelage, students develop both a rich and full tone and increased self-confidence.
Mr. Potvin is equally comfortable teaching students of any age, from beginners to advanced people. Lessons are one on one, with a duration of 30 to 60 minutes. Lessons take place at St James Anglican Church on Monday afternoons.

Professional mezzo soprano Kathleen Promane has over 20 years experience of teaching private voice lessons. With a Bachelor of Music and a postgraduate Diploma in Opera from the University of Toronto, she is well equipped to guide students of all levels. My studio is called ConBrio Music which means ‘with spirit’. Music is a gift that we develop and share with others, one that feeds our spirit, challenges our coordination, builds our brains, and creates life-long enjoyment. Music is important, especially through the pandemic, lessons have not been canceled, making music, enjoying music has not been canceled, and using music for stress relief is valuable. Music is a unique way to express ourselves and give voice to emotions that young students in particular may not be able to express in words.

My favourite part of teaching music is variety – from working with young beginners to coaching University students, every day is different.

I have been teaching piano and theory since 1995 and have submitted more than 800 students for RCM Exams! I particularly enjoy teaching the Advanced Theory Levels and it is a privilege to work with the students of many accomplished colleagues. I am an active member of ORMTA (the Ontario Registered Music teacher’s association), have an Honour’s Bachelor of Arts Degree and Certificates in Piano Pedagogy (art of teaching) from RCM. As a teacher I value life-long learning and continue looking for new ways to improve my knowledge and teaching.

Piano students are encouraged to play a variety of musical styles. My training is primarily classical, but since the mid-1990s I have enjoyed learning to chord and improvise for worship at church. I follow the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music https://www.rcmusic.com/) curriculum for the core of what I teach, and welcome students to bring any other music they want to play! Duets, trios, and quartets (2 pianos, 8 hands) are great fun to learn and perform with others.

Sharon’s “motto” for all things singing is “Singing for the Love of it!”

She holds a Degree of Music in Voice Performance and a second Degree in Education. Along with teaching high school Music, she enjoyed a singing career in Opera and Concert for many years.

She is the Artistic Director for the Blyth Festival Singers in Huron county, Ontario and the founding Artistic Director of the Women’s Chamber Ensemble, Kinnaris, in Stratford Ontario. Prior to that she was part of the Artistic staff of the St. Mary’s Children’s Choir and the Artistic Director for the New Tecumseth Singers in Simcoe County, Ontario.

As President of the New Tecumseth Arts Council, Sharon helped found the South Simcoe Festival of the Arts and served for eight years as an Executive member of the Ontario Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Her interest in conducting began when she founded the “Intermediate Vocal Ensemble” to broaden the performance opportunities for her vocal students during her time as a faculty member at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Art.

Sharon’s students have successfully entered Universities, Colleges and Theatre Schools across Canada to study Music, Arts Programs and Acting. She is delighted to find the varied and creative ways that they are living lives that include singing!

The Stratford Symphony Youth Orchestra, formed in 2021 by conductor Éric Charbonneau under the umbrella of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra is a place for young musicians to play with their peers and develop their ensemble playing skills.

The ensemble is seeking all orchestral instruments (strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) to add to its current roster. The SSYO welcomes students of all ages from Stratford and surrounding areas who have two or more years of experience playing their instrument.

Members of the orchestra will benefit from coachings from professional musicians as well as being part of an actively growing ensemble.

Under the wing of the SSO – the Youth Orchestra will have opportunities for observing SSO rehearsals, and, eventually, participating in joint performances.

Originally from Regina, SK, Tracey Frank cites music and teaching as her longest running and most exciting adventure that has taken her all over Canada, the United States, and Japan. She holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Music History from Western University, a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Regina, and a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Duquesne University, in addition to additional woodwind and jazz studies at Humber College.

Tracey enjoys performing both classical and commercial styles with various large and small ensembles throughout Ontario, and can be heard on recently released EP “Bittersweet Remedy” by London, ON based singer/songwriter Leanne Mayer. 

Known for her passionate and vibrant teaching style, Tracey’s teaching focuses on empowering students by giving them the technical and artistic tools to succeed in performance. For over 20 years, Tracey has been dedicated to providing high quality music lessons in a fun and friendly environment. All students learn the tools they need to play the music of their choice. Patrick grew up in New Brunswick, Éric in Québec, they met at Western University and moved to Stratford in 2017. Alongside his work as a professional musician, Éric also teaches a studio of voice and piano students. He offers coaching and audition preparation for voice (opera or musical theatre), piano, chamber ensembles and accompaniment students. Éric is fluent in French and English, and can coach multiple languages for singers. He is happy to accept students who want weekly lessons, or to work with students as a coach on an “as needed” basis, preparing them for kiwanis, university auditions and/or attending student’s lessons as an accompanist. 

Éric has a B. Mus in performance from the University of Sherbrooke and a M. Mus in collaborative piano from Western University. He has been teaching piano since his teenage years and always keeps a balance between teaching and performing. The Stratford Festival brought him to Stratford as Éric joined as rehearsal pianist on HMS Pinafore and substitute keyboardist on Guys & Dolls. Then, Éric was the associate conductor on The Music Man, Billy Elliot and, in 2020 before Covid-19, on Chicago. Éric joined the Stratford Festival’s Education Department in 2017 as music director of the musical theatre intensive The Shakespeare’s School and has been teaching different workshops for the theatre since then. He has performed with Canada’s finest musical theatre talent and was recently seen on stage with legendary composer Alan Menken in Portrait of a Collaboration: Alan Menken & Marion Adler. Patrick privately teaches french horn, trumpet, piano (classical only), theory and ear training. He also offers sectionals and masterclasses to chamber ensembles, brass and wind students.

Patrick recently joined the horn section of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra. He obtained his B. Mus with honours in performance from Dalhousie University and a M. Mus in performance & literature from Western University. Patrick completed his RCM grade 10 in piano before making the switch to french horn. Patrick has performed with professional orchestras in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario, as well as toured across Europe with an orchestra from Long Island New York. 

Both Patrick and Éric maintain small studios, with a focus on (but not limited to) students aged 10 and above. They are able to share students, and always begin with an introductory zoom meeting for prospective students to understand their goals and match them with the appropriate teacher.

I believe that each student is quite different and unique in their talents and capabilities, as well as their musical goals. Therefore, I do not follow one strict teaching form or method, but approach each student on an individual basis, structured to fit their particular needs and abilities. Classical music is the foundation of my approach, but I enjoy teaching all styles of music — from classical to popular — believing that using whatever style captures the interest is the best way to learn.

There are three areas of musical development that I highly stress: Musicality, educational background, and performing. Specifically, tone, technique, interpretation, expression, and sight-reading are points I emphasize musically. Educationally, I try to incorporate fundamental theory and music history into each lesson to develop a concept of harmony, style and an educated performer. I encourage all of my students to experience performing through active participation in school bands, youth orchestras, and other local performing groups by having solo recitals, and by playing for weddings and church services; as well as hearing other musicians perform.

Over Five Decades of Experience

I am an accomplished and versatile professional flautist, with extensive experience in solo performing. My background includes principle flute positions in numerous orchestras for symphony, ballet, opera and musical theatre productions. I have been featured in performances on radio and television, as well as solo recitals, benefit concert and church services. I have also taught the flute privately since 1967.

Originally from San Diego, I moved to Canada in 1982 and reside in Stratford, Ontario. I pursued musical training at the United States International University’s School of Performing Arts, where I majored in Music Performance on the flute.

Instructors of note include Frederick Baker and Adrian Negrette, as well as masterclasses with flautists Jean Pierre Rampal (San Francisco, 1973) and Jams Galway (Seattle, 1982).

I currently hold the position of principle flute in the Blyth Festival Orchestra. I have also held principal flute positions in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Touring Orchestra, San Diego Starlight Opera Orchestra, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the Center for the Performing Arts Chamber Orchestra and the International Opera Studio Orchestra.

I continue to specialize in solo work through my business, Elegant Music. This includes a busy schedule of weddings, receptions, restaurant engagements, and music for special occasions of any kind. I have also been a featured performer for the Stratford Festival Theatre, providing “lobby music” for the Festival prior to performances.

In addition, I proposed, initiated and coordinated a project involving music at the London Regional Cancer Centre. This project was the first of its kind in Canada. The objective was to bring live music into the Cancer Centre during peak chemotherapy clinics, providing relaxing, soothing background music for cancer patients and family members, thereby reducing their stress and anxiety. The project was received with overwhelming success by patients and staff.

Jill Wright has several years of experience teaching piano and theory in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, New Brunswick and most recently in Ontario while being an active member of the above-mentioned provincial Registered Music Teachers’ Associations. She earned her Associate Teacher’s Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London, England.

Jill is also experienced in providing piano accompaniment for various instruments, solo voice and choral groups including church and school choirs. As well, she has held several music ministry positions including choral conducting and instrumental support at numerous churches across the country.  While living in Saskatchewan, she served on the board of the Saskatchewan Choral Federation.

From a young age, Jill has enjoyed singing in various choral groups in Canada including Calgary’s Spiritus Chamber Choir and the Halifax Camerata Singers, both of which are awarding-winning a cappella chamber choirs.   Currently, Jill is a member of the alto section of the Stratford Concert Choir and Kinnaris Women’s Ensemble.

Dini Westman has been a music educator for 25 years. Her vast choral experience include the Toronto Children’s Chorus, Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, Tafelmusik Choir, Deer Park United Church, and Opera in Concert. Dini studied choral conducting at the University of Toronto and mentored with Jean Ashworth Bartle obtaining a BA in voice, education. She is a passionate and knowledgeable educator who has earned an impressive reputation in the musical community in Canada.

In 2017, Westman started the Stratford Youth Singers. A children’s choir of 30 members. In 2019 it expands to a junior choir (ages 6-9) and a main choir (ages 10-17) and select singers for a chamber choir.

Dini Westman was a member of the University of Toronto Opera Orchestra and University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Leaning towards her passion for children’s music education, she mentored under Dorothy Jones and obtained here ECE Suzuki training in 1996.  Dini continued her violin and ECE studies at the San Francisco Conservatory.

She began teaching Suzuki in Toronto in 1993 with TCI (Toronto Children’s Institute for Music and the Arts). In 1995 she taught with the Toronto Board of Education, six schools including violin, viola, cello and bass. In 2002-2004 she taught violin in London Ontario at CTEC (Children’s Talent Education Centre).

She currently is director of her own violin academy in Stratford, Ontario in its 15th year.  The renowned school, Stratford Strings Academy, provides violin training for all levels of Suzuki and beyond. Royal Conservatory exams are highlighted in the curriculum past grade 4 level.  The Stratford Strings Academy provides its violinists with weekly group classes, many performance opportunities, master classes, and summer camps, Disney performing excursions and exchanges with other violin schools throughout the world.

She is founder and director of the scholarship based, charitable, youth ensemble the ‘Kathleen Parlow Quartet,’ which provides young string players from South Western Ontario the opportunity to train and embrace chamber music.

Every student that I have taught over the years has been wonderfully unique. From that perspective I work with each student’s strengths and weaknesses, while encouraging each one to be the best they can be, as a pianist, a musician and a person.

There are different learning styles and each student will learn music reading, theory and performance in their own way. I try to keep an open mind and do my best to work with each young person in what works best for them. Parents are welcome at lessons.

There are of course basics that need to be mastered. Reading, technique and theory. However, along with the basics, and after that, there are many opportunities for each student to develop her or his unique “voice.” My aim for each student is to find enjoyment in their studies through a variety of pieces and styles. For some there will be enjoyment in improvisation and composition. (I often use Christopher Norton’s books and backing tracks for improvisation.)

As musical skills develop through piano study, my hope is that my young students will be equipped to use their talents in church, at school, with other instruments and friends, and in my Studio “Music Parties”. At Music Parties students perform for other students, their families and learn to communicate musically with others, make friends, and where they can improve their skills at the piano.

My students enjoy performing at festivals: also exams are an option for some.

So you can see that there are many goals that we can set together. And I see myself as a community music teacher helping young students on their musical journey. I respect my students, am proud of their achievements and very much love teaching them. There has been great joy for me guiding youngsters!

Of course, junior and intermediate students make up the largest percentage of any community music studio. And my studio has been the same.

However, I have been honoured over my teaching career to have helped and encouraged advanced students achieve some excellent goals and results.

In my teaching I have always sought to have my students enjoy the challenges of each composers’ style and to help them to love music and to become the best musician that they can.

My primary studio is in Stratford, where my teaching piano is a semi-concert grand. Regular studio “parties” or home concerts are organized for students to play for each other, in preparation for festivals and exams. My secondary studio is in Uptown Waterloo.

My previous students have always proven to be a most diverse group. Some of the young beginners were later accepted into university programs in music and later entered grad school. These are now professional musicians spread around the world (Whistler, New York, Australia and Hong Kong). Others later entered the sciences and are now physicians with an interest in music. There were adults who returned to music once their careers were well established, or even retired, and were looking for some artistic challenges.

Completing a B.Mus from the University of Manitoba, I was then awarded Canada Council and Manitoba Arts Council grants for 3 years of study in the UK with Joan Davies (BBC recording artist). Ruth and I were later recruited by Boston U. as scholarship candidates for the M.Mus program and studied with Igor Kipnis.

I taught in B.C. for 15 years at Trinity Western University and in my private studio. My wife and I began touring as a two fortepiano team performing widely up and down the west coast in both Canada and the United States. At this time I also lectured in Toronto on performance practice at the Royal Conservatory’s summer school “The Art of Teaching.”

I was fortunate during my time in Winnipeg to work with Alma Brock Smith. This provided a musical lineage that led back to the Theodor Leschetizky. He was a pupil of Czerny, who had studied with Beethoven. As a “Leschetizky Pianist” I am a founding member of the Canadian branch of the Leschetizky Association.

Short Biography

Paul Coates holds ARCT diplomas in both piano and voice as well as a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the University of Western Ontario. He also studied at the Chautauqua Institute and the Banff School of Fine Arts. He was privileged to perform for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in London England and has attended master classes with Gwendolyn Koldofsky, Elly Ameling and Rudolph Jansen.

Since his graduation he has enjoyed an active and varied performing career as both singer and accompanist, including solo concerts, chamber music, appearances with orchestras, CBC and TV Ontario broadcasts.

Paul has been a faculty member of the School of Music of Windsor and the Royal Conservatory of Music where he taught in both the Community School and the Glenn Gould Professional School.

Currently he maintains a private studio in Stratford. He is also active as an adjudicator and a clinician for ORMTA and is excited about his new series of talk for any organization on “FINDING A KINDER WAY – to BE who YOU ARE!”

The importance of being mindfully present in the now while celebrating the whole student. You are AWESOME just because you are. Not because of what you do or do not do! Barbara Dunn-Prosser has over 40 years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching privately, both voice and piano, to students of all ages, she has taught high school music, drama and musical theatre in Lennox and Addington County, and vocal jazz at Humber College in Toronto. She currently teaches voice at Western University in London, Ontario and has a small private studio in Stratford.

Singing is a whole body endeavour, physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual. To develop a person’s unique sound takes many years of gentle guidance and suggestion. Discovering the strengths and limitations of each individual is important for both teacher and student so that realistic goals can be set and achieved. Singing is a natural and intuitive way of communicating but it is important to learn the fundamentals of good vocal production, to develop confidence about sharing this talent and to be introduced to different kinds of songs. As a person matures so does the body and so does the voice. It is always changing and evolving throughout one’s entire life. And that fact can be both frustrating and exciting. Learning to sing well requires a great deal of patience and commitment.

In addition to “building” a voice, or developing a balanced vocal production, a singer must learn musicianship skills. Keyboard skills are highly beneficial and often can be studied with a singing lesson in the early days of instruction. Learning music has been shown to improve intelligence and versatility in learning other disciplines. If appropriate, students are encouraged to participate in the Royal Conservatory Certificate Program which fosters healthy vocal production, performance, and technical proficiency in a progressive stream. Even students whose focus is contemporary commercial music can strongly benefit from the discipline and instruction involved in this program.

Singers tend to like to share their voices and performing is a positive and deeply fulfilling experience when one is well prepared and supported by a friendly audience. Students are encouraged to take opportunities to perform; at church, community music festivals, school events and choirs or even just for parents and friends. The skill of memorization and standing in front of people is invaluable and can be empowering. Once I was asked to help prepare the general manager of an important corporation for an important professional development meeting. They had been told they had to sing a song in front of their peers at a conference as an exercise in strengthening leadership and public presentation skills!

Good physical, emotional and spiritual health is essential for good singing. Life management skills are often part of the learning curve of a singer because everything affects the voice. And, as with any athletic exercise, practise is the only way to improve.

In 40 years of teaching I have been blessed with many happy graduates who continue to flatter me with their thanks and praise. Some are now teachers themselves, some are professional performers in both musical theatre and opera, some have gone on to create music or form folk/rock bands and some completed a level of learning that was satisfactory for them to sing as non-vocational soloists or in the ensemble of community or church choirs. I have also tutored dozens of singers successfully in the Royal Conservatory Certificate Program.

Biography

Barbara’s performing career is a versatile one. She has appeared opposite Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Donna Elvira in Rhombus Media’s award winning film of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and has been a featured soloist with symphony orchestras across North America in her role as Mme. Cuzzoni in the Classical Kids production of Halleluiah Handel and in Pops Concerts with the Victoria Symphony, Orchestra London, the Kingston Symphony and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. She has written and performed two historically based one-woman shows, Come to the Woods, about pioneer artist and writer Anne Langton, and Lest We Forget, which interprets the way WW1 affected the lives of women in a small Ontario village.

Operatic credits include Mme. Silverklang in Mozart’s The Impresario and Sharon in Master Class for the Stratford Festival Workshops, Fanny in Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Ophélie in Hamlet and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel and Lucy in The Telephone. Barbara has also spent several seasons with the Canadian Opera Company, appearing in such productions as Béatrice et Bénédict, Dialogues des Carmélites, Der Fliegende Holländer and I Pagliacci.

Barbara was a member of the acting company at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival for seven seasons appearing in productions such as, The Elephant Song, Into the Woods; The Gondoliers; The Sound of Music, Hello Dolly, The Seagull and H.M.S. Pinafore. She performed in the ensemble and as Carlotta in both the touring and Toronto companies of The Phantom of the Opera. In 2002 she released her CD Till We Meet Again. In 2010, Barbara was the featured soloist at a gala fundraiser for the Barnardo Society in Scotland, U.K.

Barbara holds a BA, MA and BEd from Queen’s University in Kingston, and is an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in voice and piano. She is currently an adjudicator for Canadian music festivals, and a member of the Ontario Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing where she has served on the executive and as District Governor. Barbara has been a member of the Royal Conservatory College of Examiners since 1996. With her colleague Susan Ambrose, she revised the voice syllabus for The Royal Conservatory and compiled Resonance: a comprehensive voice series published in 2012. Barbara has been teaching voice at Western University since 2008.

Lessons and Policy

Lessons are either 30 or 60 minutes long depending on the level and needs of the student. The lesson begins with vocal exercises to develop breath management, range and flexibility. Repertoire will be chosen that is appropriate for both the vocal level and the emotional maturity of the student and will include a variety of styles. The purchase of music, rather than photocopying, is preferred.

It is expected that 24 hours notice will be given for the cancellation of a lesson or the fee will be charged. Exceptions will be made in the case of emergencies or inclement weather. Parents may attend lessons unless this causes inhibition or lack of focus for the student.

Piano lessons started out as a fun hobby as I went to Laurier University for my Bachelor of Science in biology and physical geography and continued with Mohawk and the Michener Institute for Medical Laboratory Technician.  I do work full time as a Laboratory Manager, and I also work part time as a fitness instructor.  I volunteer for the YMCA and the Tavistock fair, and have volunteered for Trinity church in the past.

I have run many Church Christmas and Easter concerts, and the Tavistock Talent shows. I taught the music for young children program for many years but unfortunately due to time restraints decided to focus on private lessons. 

I really enjoy the private lessons, and getting to know my students one on one.  We go on a musical journey together, and I love the places we go.  Some journeys are for personal satisfaction, some have been for exams, and others have had the honour of receiving festival trophies for all their hard practice.  Everyone’s musical journey is different and I enjoy them all.

    Eric started teaching music when he was 12 years old, after obtaining Grade 10 on piano accordion. With 48 years of teaching experience, he has found that “interest is the greatest motivator of learning,” and that playing music has to be “fun.”

    Music Styles: Classical, Jazz, Popular, Celtic, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock.

    Beginner students are taught by “ear,” playing along with YouTube videos and recordings. This is, after all the way we all learned our first language. We learnt how to talk by imitating our parents… learning to read much later.

    After the student has learnt to actually “play” music, applied music theory is taught… explaining why and how these chords, melody notes and rhythms work with each other.

    Music notation, (reading) is then taught after the student is already performing and enjoying music.

    Music “reading” is introduced earlier on some instruments: violin, clarinet and piano for instance. And on some instruments it’s not really practical to read traditional music notation, but we use tablature or chord symbols: harmonica, dobro, banjo, ukulele, singing and chording on guitar and piano.

    Creativity, songwriting and composition are encouraged from the earliest stage of learning music and since lessons are taught in a professional digital recording studio, the techniques and art of modern recording are experienced.

    Eric teaches through Skype to advanced guitar students from Australia, Europe and across Canada.

    About Eric Mahar

    One of Eric’s earliest musical memories is playing a plastic ukulele or harmonica in front of the television along with the Don Messer Show. Add to this fact that his parents and grandparents are Prince Edward Islanders and he grew up listening to family and relatives playing “Olde Time” music at get-togethers.

    Eric’s music education began with harmonica, taught by his father Fred Mahar, and then achieved grade 10 on the Piano Accordion at age 12. He then studied classical guitar, electric guitar and clarinet, playing in several professional bands and joining The International Musicians’ Union before high school, (youngest musician at the time to belong to the union).

    After high school, Eric studied music at Humber College graduating with “First Class Honours” in the famous Certificate program, as well as private classical guitar lessons through the University of Toronto. During this time he was fortunate to have private lessons for jazz guitar with the legendary guitarists Lenny Breau, John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner.

    Many years were then spent on the road in various recording studios across Canada and Europe with a variety of recording artists, including a ten-year association with the multiple Juno Award-winning group, “The Mercy Brothers,” as a producer and performer.

    Eric returned to college to gain a Certificate in Broadcasting and worked in media sales at a Toronto Advertising agency.

    Lately, Eric has been a featured jazz, country, pop and classical guitarist/singer performing in Canada and Europe in a variety of stage shows, theatre productions or concerts, and is a busy studio musician and producer. He enjoys mountain biking, cross country skiing or just being out in the woods.

    Stratford-born soprano Barbara Collier studied singing in London, Salzburg, Cologne and Budapest after graduating from Trinity College, University of Toronto.
    She has been acclaimed internationally for her appearances with orchestras in Europe,
    the United States and Canada. Her repertoire extends from the oratorios of Bach, Haydn and Mozart to the music of Richard Strauss, Villa-Lobos, Canteloube and Gilbert and Sullivan.

    Barbara has performed the lyric operatic heroines of Mozart, Donizetti, Gounod, Verdi, Bizet and Puccini in North America and Europe. She was a member of the COC’s National Touring Company for five years as well as performing in the Toronto season. Opera companies with which she has sung include Vancouver Opera, Miami Opera, Pacific Opera, the National Arts Centre, Manitoba Opera, Saskatoon Opera and Opera in Concert.

    A versatile performer, she has sung with the Toronto Symphony, Orchestra London, the Calgary Philharmonic, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the K-W Symphony, Toronto Philharmonia and the York Symphony and as soloist with the Stratford Concert Choir.

    Solo and duet recitals played an important part in Barbara’s career. She has performed with Toronto Operetta Theatre to showcase the music of Ivor Novello and Victor Herbert. A most memorable concert was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of D-Day, held at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre. She was partnered with Mark Dubois, Mark Pedrotti and the late John Arpin.

    Frequent radio and television appearances in Europe and Canada include CBC’s “Play Gypsy,” a special on the music of Imre Kalman, and an appearance with the legendary Tito Gobbi, filmed in Rome, as part of the Masters of the Performing Arts Series.

    Barbara is in demand as a vocal adjudicator and clinician. She was the featured guest artist at a National Convention of Registered Music Teachers in Saskatoon, where she held a master class, gave a recital and a lecture. A member of NATS, Barbara now resides in Stratford, Ontario, where she operates a successful private voice studio.

    Now that you know something about my performance history, I want to talk about my teaching career. Since moving to Stratford in 2005, I have been able to devote more time to my voice studio. I have helped many students to achieve a solid vocal technique, to learn a varied repertoire and to gain confidence in their ability of communicate with their voices.
    Some have gone on to successful performance careers while others continue to participate in choirs or just sing for the joy it brings.

    I do insist on teaching classical voice technique – proper breath and support management, good use of resonance, projection and a reasonable proficiency in languages such as Italian, German, French and Spanish as these languages help with lip flexibility and jaw relaxation, sometimes not too easily achieved by the way we speak North American English. My main focus is on classical repertoire but I do work with repertoire from musical theatre, folk songs and ballads, etc. I do not teach pop music.

    One of my strengths is choosing pieces that best reflect a student’s ability and personality. Although I expect my students to work hard, I do understand that singers are not machines and that things happen in life that sometimes get in the way of progress. Having had the experience of several decades as a performer, I am able to show compassion for how issues can affect one’s singing and I firmly believe that laughter is a great tonic and reliever of tension. My experiences on stage, with orchestra and chorus and on tour have given me a good perspective on what is required physically and emotionally to become a good, reliable singer.

    It is preferable if students have basic musical knowledge, such as being able to read music. I teach all ages and can prepare candidates for conservatory exams up and including A.R.C.T., or equivalent. I also welcome adults who wish to improve their vocal skills as choir members or just for their own pleasure.

    I have had the privilege of providing piano lessons for students of all ages in Stratford since 1990. I have coached and prepared students for Kiwanis Music Festivals and Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams with success.

    In recent years, I have been offering group or private lessons for adults to learn to play the piano or rediscover their skills in a supportive setting paying attention to their own interests, goals and learning styles.

    Finding ways to be more creative, expressive and imaginative in playing the piano is not only for my students but also for myself as teacher. In that regard, I am a student for life and value the role professional development plays in my ongoing musical journey. I have membership with and participate in three professional piano networking groups.

    After graduating with a music degree from Queen’s University I fell in love with theatre and for many years I composed shows and toured schools with a theatre company called Theatre On the Move. From there I began music directing and accompanying shows for other theatres throughout Ontario.

    Fast forward to Stratford when I moved here in 1990 with my wife Barbara Fulton who became a regular and recognizable performer with Stratford Festival company.

    I briefly taught in the public school system here and then spent many years as the music teacher at Stratford Montessori School followed by four years at the Stratford Middle Years school.

    During my time in Stratford I have composed the music for 5 productions at the Stratford Festival. I continue my close association with the Festival and will be composing the music for All’s Well That Ends Well in 2022 in the new Tom Patterson Theatre.

    Teaching Style

    My approach to teaching recognizes that most students are not interested in a career as a professional musician but simply want to learn the language of music to create, compose and have fun. However, it can only become fun with practice. I encourage parents to be involved even if music is a foreign language. Setting aside at least 15 or 20 minutes a day can make a tremendous difference in the student’s progress as well as their eagerness to continue. I am, of course, willing to work with students who are interested in developing a more advanced proficiency.

    I write my own music and love working with any student who wishes to compose music or write their own songs.

    I am familiar with many styles of music and continue to play in Jazz and Pop groups. I will teach classical piano up to grade 6.

    I love sharing my passion for making and enjoying music. I believe that learning the violin requires discipline and focus, balanced with an environment that is encouraging and fun. My priority is to make this musical experience positive and productive for students and families.

    The Suzuki Method of string pedagogy is the main structure of my program. This method focuses on forming excellent technique and beautiful tone (sound) from the very beginning of study, skills that are transferable to all musical styles. Classical, fiddle, folk, hymns, Christmas music, are all types of music that I teach within my program.

    My program runs from September to May and consists of one private lesson per week, and one mandatory group class twice a month. There are a number of performance opportunities in the season eg. solo recitals, group recitals, Kiwanis.

    Although the majority of my students tend to be children, I do have a number of adult students and welcome and enjoy teaching learners of any age!

    I have been learning and playing music since I was 6. I started studying the violin when I was 17. I received a Bachelor of Musical Arts with Distinction followed by a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario. Teaching and playing the violin is what I love to do. I play with the Stratford Symphony Orchestra, Stratford Youth Orchestra, Stringtet, as well as various functions. My new passion is fiddle music, which I am pursuing with glee through authentic fiddle teachers and local traditions.

    Formerly of Stratford Ontario, Kathleen Wood has recently relocated to Saskatchewan.  She is currently offering private music theory lessons in an online format.  She is learning to co-ordinate lessons across multiple time zones and looks forward to continuing her connections with Stratford.

    Kathleen has had a long career as a music theory teacher.  Focusing on teaching private lessons has allowed her to specialize in adapting instruction to each individual student and their particular interests.  In her teaching, Kathleen emphasizes the connection between theory and making music. Rather than just learning theory at a desk and from a book, students are given opportunities to learn how theory applies to the music they make. Ear training is also prioritized in this approach.

    Kathleen has experience in teaching students from ages 10 to 80.  Her students routinely achieve first class honours and distinction on RCM theory examinations.  Some have been gone on to study music at postsecondary institutions including the faculties of music at the University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill.  Others pursue lessons to develop their musical literacy, increase mental focus, or find support for musical projects.

    At present, Kathleen is offering lessons in rudiments, ear training, and harmony.  Lessons are customized to accommodate your individual schedule and goals.

    Originally from Duncan BC, Kathleen Wood began her early studies of piano and theory in Saskatchewan, at the Regina Conservatory of Music where her piano teacher was Gordon Wallis. Kathleen then earned a Bachelor of Music degree (major in music history and literature) from the University of Toronto, where she studied piano with Andrew Markow. This was followed by several years of composition study with Dr. Alexander Rapoport at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

    Kathleen was a member of the College of Examiners at the Royal Conservatory of Music from 1995 to 2018.  Over the years, she marked several thousands of rudiments, harmony, counterpoint, and analysis examinations.  From 1999 to 2014 she served as the Junior Harmony Coordinator, a role in which she was responsible for developing marking schemes for use by the team of harmony examiners.  She also served on the Council of Examiners and presented workshops for teachers.  Kathleen has set and edited examination papers in a wide range of grades and subjects, served on review panels, and mentored new examiners.

    Kathleen has contributed to several publications of The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited.  She revised, updated, and edited Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharram (2005, 2010).  She served as content editor for the three-volume Harmony series by Mark Sarnecki (2002, 2003, and 2005, second edition 2010).  She participated in the development of the RCM Celebrate Theory series as a reviewer of the Levels 9, 10, and ARCT Harmony, Counterpoint, and Analysis volumes (2017).

    Kathleen provided several arrangements and figured-bass realizations for the Royal Conservatory series of graded repertoire books published by Frederick Harris.  Her work appears in series for Violin (2006, 2013, and 2021 editions), Flute (2010), Voice (2012 and 2019), Viola (2013), Cello (2013), Trumpet (2013), and Saxophone (2014).

    Kathleen has composed original works for keyboard, voice, choir, and chamber groups and often draws upon historical styles in her compositions.   A long-time student of yoga, Kathleen is currently exploring ways to draw together her interests in yoga and music.

    Whenever I mention I’m a piano teacher, the conversation veers in fairly predictable directions. Some folks wanted to play, but couldn’t get their (usually left) hands to cooperate. Some lean in conspiratorially; “My parents thought it would be a good idea. I bet you hear that A LOT”. Some look off in the mid-distance….”I wish I had stuck with it”. An amazing number of people….I kid you not…actually had their knuckles rapped for mistakes. Ah, dear.

    My job is to enable my students to have different conversations in their future. Piano whispering is not for the faint of heart. It’s one on one, long term. You have to hold a realistic, but somewhat lofty vision, in the beginning. It’s part plan, part problem solving, part people skills, lots of work, but hopefully deeply satisfying at the end of the day. Happily, we have so much better and more varied materials and support systems than when I first started teaching. After 40 years, I can truthfully say that I enjoy the process as much or more than ever.

    And, though I’ve had some very successful students in my time, external success is only helpful insofar as it means something for the student. Sometimes, it’s an exam which was a test of courage and resolve and turned out even better than the student expected. Sometimes, music proves to be the anchor that gets a student through a divorce. Sometimes, you get picked to be part of a show, accompany your high school choir or band, or you get a huge head-start on a second instrument and your life changes. Here’s the thing I’ve learned: YOU NEVER KNOW.

    When I started to teach, I taught from the Royal Conservatory of Music books, as I was taught. I still do. The RCM, though, has pivoted considerably since the 70’s. Though it still has a firm catalogue of carefully vetted pieces in the Baroque/Classical/Romantic repertoire, roughly half the pieces in the new books are relatively modern and we have many more talented Canadian composers in the listings. I still aim for the very best standard of performance of that repertoire that the child or adult student can achieve.

    That said, realization of that material is not the entirety of the experience here. We also do a great deal of improvisation, based on programmes by Forrest Kinney and Christopher Norton. As Forrest wisely notes: “We don’t say that a person needs to be able to read before they can talk; that would be ludicrous. Why do we essentially say that when you’re learning an instrument?” This process starts with duets with the teacher, but the student can move this into composing if they choose.

    We do a lot of prep at the beginning to build up the reading and musicianship skill so that confusion doesn’t stop the process. It is a point of pride with me that I lose very, very few students before they are functionally literate at the piano. Keyboard reading will be challenging; we have to learn how to simultaneously scan vertically and horizontally and that means a lot of grist must go into the processing mill. We use many different methods, depending on the student, to make sure they have enough to keep going comfortably.

    We throw some jazz/pop around the edges and encourage people to try their own choice of pieces as they are able. Sometimes you want to wow them with Chopin, and sometimes you need something from Dear Evan Hansen.

    We do a lot of in house recitals here to normalize the business of performing. For children, they can play on a piano they know and it’s not a big production. There is also cake:). For my adults, performance anxiety is often a much bigger issue and we just get together to play and nosh and chat on a regular basis. It is rewarding and inspiring to perform, much as you fear it might not go perfectly. Performing also builds courage and confidence and is a highly transferrable skill. I am very happy to prepare people for RCM exams or festival work, but it has to be your choice.

    Again and again I hear, from my many adult students: “I NEVER remember this (concept or connection or teaching point) coming up when I studied piano as a child”. Yeah! So many things have improved in teaching and you are now able to be excited about concepts which might have induced a veiled yawn the first time ’round.

    So, a bit about me. I have my Grade 10 RCM certificate and am qualified to teach at all levels, according to the RCM. I prefer to teach to Grade 8, 9 if the student insists that they want to remain in the studio. I also have the highest level of Orff certification and several years of work in private schools teaching their music programme grades K-6, and my own studio teaching Kindermusik and Musikgarten programmes. I have been teaching in Stratford for 15 years, in various other centres in Canada for a total of over 40. I teach theory, both as part of my practical teaching and in separate lessons for exams up to Level 8 (the old Advanced Rudiments). My students regularly get First Class Honours and First Class Honours With Distinction in practical and theory examinations with the Royal Conservatory of Music and do extremely well at Kiwanis Festivals.

    I currently teach from ages 6-70 something, which is lovely for me as there is a lot of variety. Of course, a lesson for a child is very different to that of an adult and one of the most frequent comments I get is that children must learn so much faster. Hmm. Perhaps just very differently. More intuitively, perhaps. Less self-consciously, almost always. But not necessarily faster. And many adults tell me that their music study has been one of the most rewarding things they have taken on in their retirement.

    I could include testimonials here, but I would, quite frankly, have to find out where I’ve stashed the many cards I’ve received over the years. Some are in a file, I think. Some are in a box downstairs. I wish I had my scrapbooking friend’s discipline when it comes to fully honouring such things. My students live in my heart, and in the many lessons they have taught me over the years to bring me to where we are now.
